In this workshop, through the lens of storytelling and its power to inform and heal, we will explore with compassion and curiosity interracial and interethnic tensions in our workplaces with the goal of developing a deeper understanding of what causes these problems and to learn tools for addressing them.
Violence is blind to race, ethnicity, nationality, and culture. Indeed, much violence arises directly out of a perception of “otherness”, whether overtly or directly. Yet we may feel afraid to speak openly about our frustration and confusion. We may not know how to address constructively interracial and interethnic tensions even when they are overt. If we self-identify as a member of a minority group, we may feel angry and frustrated at the ignorance of those in the majority to subtle and overt examples of bias and discrimination. If we self-identify as white, we may feel defensive and even angry when we are told we are racist. These feelings can leave us walking in a chasm of silence and fear that permeates our workplaces and prevents true trust and collaboration.
We will use methods from psychology and various action-oriented tools drawn from healing traditions worldwide to emerge with:
• A deeper understanding of the phenomenon of racism drawn from stories we share and the stories of outside sources.
• An understanding from psychotherapy of how racism arises from and persists as a result of transgenerational trauma.
• A personal action plan for how to foster compassion for and open dialogue with self and others to dismantle the inner fears that feed racism.
• Tools that can be used in your work settings with employees, colleagues and clients to foster ongoing openness and curiosity about interracial and interethnic differences.
